Remembering Grace

Long before Diana, another young princess captured the world with her beauty, style, and elegance. And, unlike the former, this European royal holds us Yanks still spellbound, a quarter century after she died, in part because she was, after all, one of us.

Princess Grace of Monaco, the beloved American Oscar-winning beauty who left Hollywood behind to marry Monaco's Prince Rainier III in 1956, is being remembered in fittingly grand style on her native shores this fall. Several events in New York this October will pay tribute the princess. For those of the super-swank guest list, there is the Princess Grace Awards Gala (annual awards to emerging theater, dance, and film artists) and a charity casino event and fashion auction to benefit the arts. For the rest of us, Sotheby's will hold an exhibition of some of Princess Grace's iconic fashion. The exhibit includes a not-to-be-missed selection of gowns, outfits, jewelry, and accessories. Fashion and film buffs will fawn for the blue satin dress and cloak Kelly wore to the 1955 Academy Awards (when she won her best actress Oscar). Jewelry lovers, meanwhile, will have a chance to see her 10.47 ct. emerald-cut diamond engagement ring and her tiara (worn by daughter Caroline on a 1986 cover of Life).

Photographs, news clips, film excerpts, personal items, and even home movies, meanwhile, will trace the life of the American royal whose beauty and style influences and captivates us, even 25 years after her death.

Also paying tribute to Princess Grace this fall are Saks Fifth Avenue, with window displays showcasing original Grace Kelly–inspired fashion by American designers; Estée Lauder, with a special limited-edition lipstick in her honor; and Town & Country, with the publication of rare and never-before-seen photographs of the princess.
