Trend forecasting is tricky business in the jewelry world. We need to stay in tune with fashion but, by the time fashion designers send their looks down the runway, most jewelry designers have their own lines well under way for the upcoming season.
So, how do you avoid having a line full of peridot necklaces in a season full of red turtlenecks? Well, sometimes gut instinct and even careful culture watching can lead you astray. Enter professional forecasters and services like InfoMat (a fashion industry search engine) that follow them. The agency offers forecasts from various sources up to two seasons in advance. So, as the rest of the world awaits what designers will offer us this fall for spring/summer ’08, InfoMat and its collaborators (like Trendstop.com) are looking ahead to fall/winter ’08/’09. On the radar:
Orange. The bright hue is projected to be the It Color. Look for orange solids for a bold statement and, more likely, orange as an accent, especially to black and white.

Gloss and Shine. Patent, PVC, and other high-shine materials will lend a liquidy look. High-gloss cherry red is expected to be hot in bags, shoes, and other accessories.
More Black and White. Instead of screaming prints, however, next fall will have more of a schoolgirl or Quaker feel. Think solid black with white pointed or Peter Pan collars and matching cuffs.
1940s. As already evidenced in this fall’s collections, the tailored 1940s are coming back. Think buttoned-up dresses and suits in black or gray, and satiny blouses, especially with feminine bows and ties.

Alarm systems, security guards, and double-locking doors? Pshaw. A Michigan jeweler has a whole new idea for keeping his baubles safe: a dozen scorpions on duty round the clock. At South Lyon Watch & Jewelry, scorpions roam the jewelry cases throughout the day, offering a creepy surprise to browsing customers and a painful one to would-be thieves.
