Luxury Through the Ages

It is easy to get caught up in the day to day and lose sight of the history and impact of the dual worlds in which jewelry exists: fashion and luxury.

Enter Luxury, a new exhibit at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Luxury (a heady collection of clothes and accessories from more than two centuries) traces the history of luxury from 1750 to the present, illustrating how luxury reflects societal changes and how the democratization of luxury is the most important marketing phenomenon of modern times.

It is easy to get lost in this well-executed exhibit, in which clothes and accessories range from the elite 18th-century traditions to current "masstige" (prestige for the masses) items. A Chanel gown, for example, sits beside a Viktor & Rolf creation for H&M.

The lessons to be learned are many—from a basic history of fashion to the tastes of today's very unique luxury customer.

Fashion historian Rebecca Arnold is quoted as saying luxury offers "a sensual delight to the wearer and, frequently, a visual feast for the onlooker." We can think of no more accurate description for not just fine fashion and jewelry, but also for this exhibit, and recommend all partake of this particular feast before it is gone on Nov. 10.

Were you at the Centurion show in February? If so, congratulations, you may have made Hollywood's D list! Kathy Griffin, the headline entertainer for the event, brought along camera crews from her Bravo reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List and, when we caught the show this week, JCKstyle noticed some familiar faces (even some of our own). If you missed it, check the schedule at www.bravotv.com.
