Brokeback Mountain, Transamerica, Weeds: For film and television, 2005 was a year for the spectacularly unconventional. To our delight, the Golden Globe Awards this week aptly celebrated this distinctiveness not only with trophies but with jewelry and fashion that dazzled, surprised, and popped as it had not at recent awards shows (ahem, Emmys). Notable trends included:
- Saturated jewel tones. Colored jewels, such as Nicollette Sheridan's Harry Winston sapphire earrings, trended strongly. Ditto for jewel-tone dresses in shades of emerald and color-of-the-night ruby, chosen by Laura Linney, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, and Geena Davis.
- Bold bracelets. Like chandelier earrings, the dainty bracelets that went along with them were all but gone from the red carpet. Instead, bracelets were bolder and layered, a look favored by trendsetters like Charlize Theron and Kate Beckinsale.
- Long necklaces. Superlong necklaces complemented the popular plunging neckline silhouette. Megan Mullally, for example, stood out in Fred Leighton's long, layered diamond chain and sizable pendant.
- Relocated jewels. Stars continued the recent trend of donning jewelry in unexpected places. Marcia Cross took a fresh approach, adding Loraine Schwartz's art-deco diamond clips to her coral frock.
- Vintage homage. Many celebs channeled the past, with Reese Witherspoon's vintage Chanel cocktail dress and Keira Knightley's vintage Cartier cuff bracelets, diamond brooch, and diamond drop earrings epitomizing the trend.
