JCKstyle - March 6, 2006

After a frantic week that saw jewelers lobbying for placements, stylists clamoring for the ultimate gown, and publicists vying for airtime, a calm fell over Hollywood last night at about 3 p.m. local time with the first arrivals to Oscar’s red carpet. The trends of the season—those that will help drive jewelry design and demand for the year ahead—were immediately evident:
- Large gem earrings—Single-stone drop earrings, like nominee Amy Adams's oversized aquas or presenter Jessica Alba's pear-shape drops that matched her gold-toned gown, made a strong statement.
- Diamond drop earrings—Short drops of significant single diamonds made a strong showing thanks to nominees Rachel Weisz and Felicity Huffman, who each paired them with bare necks.
- Significant necklaces—To the oohing and aahing of style commentators, nominees Keira Knightley, in a vintage Bulgari bib-style silhouette, and Michelle Williams, in a fringe-style design of blackened metal and diamonds, made necklaces hip again.
Daily Gem—Whether it was coincidence or a deliberate show of distaste, neither E! Network's nor ABC's fashion reporters gave airtime to two starlets outed after last year's Oscars for allegedly taking payments for wearing a particular jewelry brand on the red carpet.
