JCKstyle - March 31, 2006

The pursuit of style requires some work. One must monitor fashion trends, shop discerningly, and, sometimes, be in the pop culture loop.
In news from the latter category, we bring you our favorite new television show of the season: Heist. The hourlong NBC program, which airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST, follows the story of a group of thieves who rob three jewelry stores on Rodeo Drive (“Anything worth stealing can be found right here,” says Heist character Mickey O’Neil, a career criminal) during Academy Awards week.
In the first episode, we meet the thieves and the detectives hunting them down. The narrative jumps around from crime to investigation with dark angles, quick shots, and fast-paced music reminiscent of Ocean’s Eleven. While both parties pursue their jobs, we are treated to setups and twists, more of which are sure to come in upcoming episodes.
Beyond enjoying the plot, we delighted in seeing real jewelers and jewelry stores incorporated into the show. The store robbed in the opening scene is Altobelli Jewelers in North Hollywood, Calif. Owner Cos Altobelli even makes a cameo in the episode, talking to a cop in the background. To shoot the scene, “they put in a breakaway glass,” Altobelli tells JCKstyle. “Had to do it three times. Then they reinstalled the real one.” We suspect this ode to our industry and its particularly dramatic pitfalls will keep us hooked all season, if only to shake our heads and say, “They should have read JCK’s theft-prevention tips …”
Weekly Gem:
The place where Entourage actor Jeremy Piven, the New York Public Library, and the year’s hottest fashion designers converge is the place we want to be. And so we eagerly await the Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards Gala (whew), held at the Library and hosted by Piven on June 5. This year’s nominees for our favorite category—Accessory Designer of the Year—are Tom Binns, Marc Jacobs for Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors.
