The Oscars and Emmys may be important for style watchers, but only the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala earns the reputation as fashion’s biggest party of the year.
The gala, held in New York this week, brings together fashion’s three powerhouses: fashion insiders, A-list celebrities, and socialites. And, unlike the Oscars or other awards shows, this event is all about fashion—from the theme of the evening (this year, early 20th century designer Paul Poiret), to the hostess (Vogue editor Anna Wintour), to the cause (raising money for the Costume Institute). As expected, then, the gala’s red carpet is a style watcher’s dream. A bit more fashion-forward than recent Hollywood events, and spot-on in confirming the trends emerging for the year ahead, the highlights of the night were:Black and White. Kate Moss, Naomi Watts, and Lindsay Lohan went for head-to-toe black, and Christina Ricci opted for a pure white sheath, but the freshest looks were the striking black-and-white combinations chosen by many, including Gisele Bündchen and Julianne Moore.
Metallics. Cate Blanchett, co-host for the evening, boldly chose a gold gown with tiers of fringe, Kate Bosworth chose a platinum bubble-skirt dress with a dropped waist, and Jennifer Lopez sported a silver gown in what is becoming her signature Grecian style.
While the fashion choices were anything but staid, the jewelry came up a little predictable. Diamond bracelets—especially bangles—proved to be, once again, the most important look, followed by linear drop diamond earrings (sometimes punctuated with colored gemstones).
