2. JVC PETITIONS FTC TO DISALLOW THE WORD 'CULTURED' FOR LAB-CREATED DIAMONDS
In a 30-page legal petition to the Federal Trade Commission, the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, along with the nine trade associations have asked that the use of the word "cultured" not be allowed in connection with laboratory-created diamonds. To read more click here.


3. REPORT: TIFFANY TO OPEN A DIAMOND FACILITY IN BOTSWANA
A Botswanan businessman told a newspaper that he has partnered with Tiffany & Co. to open a diamond cutting and polishing facility in the diamond-rich country. To read more click here.


4. JEWELRY SALESMAN SHOT DURING HOLDUP
Two men held up and shot a jewelry salesman Wednesday afternoon outside his store, according to media reports. To read more click here.


5. CHAIN STORE SALES ROSE BY 1 PERCENT IN EARLY DECEMBER
Sales at chain stores increased by 1 percent for the week ending Dec. 9, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. and UBS Securities LLC. On a year-over-year basis, sales grew by 3.2 percent. To read more click here.


6. HOLIDAY ONLINE SPENDING HITS $17.5 BILLION
During the first 42 days of the holiday season, total online retail spending (non-travel) reached $17.56 billion, a 24-percent increase versus the corresponding days in 2005, according to comScore Networks, which measures digital data. To read more click here
 


7. HALE’S CELEBRATES 150 YEARS
Hale’s Jewelers, Greenville, S.C., recently celebrated its 150th Anniversary. A family owned retailer since 1856, Hale’s is a member of Jewelers of America’s JA 100 Club, which honors retail jewelry stores that have been in continuous operation for a century or longer and have provided their communities with knowledgeable, professional service. 8. BOTSWANA COURT RULING PLEASES DE BEERS
The High Court of Botswana said Wednesday that it saw no grounds for out-of-court claims by the First People of the Kalahari and their supporters that the government and diamond giant De Beers wanted to clear their ancestral hunting grounds in the Kalahari Desert for diamond mining. The court's declaration was part of a case in which it ruled that more than 1,000 Bushmen had been wrongly evicted from their homes in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and that they should be allowed to return. 9. DICAPRIO GETS BEST ACTOR NOD FOR 'BLOOD DIAMOND'
Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays an ex-mercenary who turns to smuggling guns and diamonds in the movie Blood Diamond, has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award. To read more click here.
