1. JCK INDUSTRY FUND ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
JCK Events, the leading producer of trade events in the fine jewelry industry, and JCK Publishing Group, publishers of JCK magazine, are accepting applications for grants from the annual JCK Industry Fund. The application deadline is Dec. 15. To read more click here.

 

2. BLUE NILE THIRD QUARTER SALES INCREASE; INCOME FALLS
Blue Nile reported third quarter net sales of $53.2 million, compared to net sales of $42 million in the third quarter of 2005, an increase of 26.8 percent. Net income in the third quarter totaled $1.8 million, compared to $2.5 million in the prior year. To read more click here.


3. JA APPLAUDS POSITIVE ACTION AT KP PLENARY
Jewelers of America hailed the participants of the Kimberley Process for its achievements at its annual plenary meeting last week in Botswana. To read more click here.


4. ISRAELI DIAMOND INDUSTRY UNDERLINES COMMITMENT TO KIMBERLEY PROCESS
The Israeli diamond industry reiterated its commitment to the Kimberley Process and the eradication of the trade in conflict diamonds, at the conclusion of the annual plenary meeting in Gaborone, Botswana. To read more click here.


5. SURVEY: CHRISTMAS GIFT SPENDING TO RISE 9%
Gift givers, also known as "gifters," are expected to spend $949 on Christmas gifts this year, up 9.1 percent from the average of $870 spent last year, according to a recent survey. To read more click here.


6. NGOS LAUNCH 'BLOOD DIAMOND' WEB SITE
Global Witness, Amnesty International, and the "Blood Diamond" movie have launched a new Web site, www.blooddiamondaction.org, which contains information about conflict diamonds that is often critical of the industry. To read more click here.


7. STUDY: DIAMOND SELF PURCHASES OUTRANK DIAMOND GIFTS
About 83 percent of consumers in an Internet survey own diamond jewelry, with 68 percent having bought diamonds for themselves. Bridal, Christmas holidays, and birthdays gifts were the next highest according to the respondents of a recent a recent Jewelry Consumer Opinion Council study. To read more click here.


8. GEMS & GEMOLOGY RECEIVES PRSA BERNAYS AWARDS
Gems & Gemology, the Gemological Institute of America's quarterly professional journal, received the Edward L. Bernays "Mark of Excellence" award from the Public Relations Society of America's San Diego Chapter. To read more click here.


9. MARKOWITZ NAMED CURATOR OF BOSTON'S MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
Yvonne Markowitz, an expert on ancient and modern jewelry, will become the first Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. To read more click here.


10. MJSA HONORED FOR EXPORT ACHIEVEMENT EFFORTS
Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America, Providence, R.I., was awarded a certificate of export achievement for its efforts in promoting the USA Pavilion at Joya 2005 in Guadalajara, Mexico. To read more click here.

11. SOPHIE LEU DONATES JADEITE SCULPTURE TO GIA
The Gemological Institute of America has received a carved natural jadeite sculpture of a leaping carp from Sophie Leu, who has made several jadeite donations to the Institute in recent years. The piece will be displayed as part of the Institute’s Museum Collection at the Robert Mouawad Campus in Carlsbad. To read more click here.
