Vive la Jewelry!

In jewelry, when it comes to European prestige, we usually think first of the Italians, who overshadow their neighbors to the west. But the French, for those who have explored their precious jewels, are as adept at jewelry as they are at fashion, and San Francisco celebrated their creations with a special in-store event and exhibit last weekend.

Shreve & Co., the City by the Bay's legendary jeweler, hosted a trunk show for several French jewelers, some of whom had never been seen in the United States. The show, Joaillerie Contemporaine de France, featured the works of 10 French designers, including Mathon Paris, Waskoll, Garnazelle, and Alain Roure.

The event opened with a private reception cohosted by Didier Janci, the French Trade Commissioner in San Francisco, and the French Consul General. Many of the designers themselves were on hand. Attendees included the local press, who gave the exhibit rave reviews, proving that even a weak economy and poor exchange rate can't take the luster off an interesting promotion and, of course, that French je ne sais quoi.

Weekly Gem
Speaking of interesting promotions, Bailey's Fine Jewelry wowed their community in Raleigh, N.C., last month by leaving little gifts for residents, well, all over the place. Twenty wrapped jewelry parcels (each valued at $20 to $100) were placed in various locales, and denizens watched the excitement unfold. From the local press to excited residents themselves, word has spread enormously and Bailey's has expanded the promotion to its other markets.
