Brilliance!: Masterpieces From the American Jewelry Design Council by Cindy Edelstein and Frank Stankus
Brilliance!

Every year since 1995 the American Jewelry Design Council tasks its membership with creating an original design based on a specific theme—Cube, Wheel, Key, Puzzle, Water, Flight, Peekaboo, Fold, Sphere, Pyramid, Secret Treasure, and Spiral.

After 12 years, the collection has grown massive and, in itself, has become a source of inspiration for all in the field. The only problem? Public viewing of such an enormous collection would prove a logistical dilemma. The solution? A sleek, 200+-page coffee-table book, Brilliance!: Masterpieces From the American Jewelry Design Council by Cindy Edelstein and Frank Stankus. The book includes images of each design, organized by year and topic, along with anecdotes from the designers, and designer biographies.

Edelstein, who will be present at the Platinum Guild International–sponsored launch party for Brilliance! on Tuesday at the Belenky Bros. Gallery in Manhattan, spoke fondly of the four-month period putting the book together. "My husband Frank and I really took on the project as a labor of love," she says. "When we were approached with the idea [of Brilliance!], we saw it as a great opportunity not only to write but also to explore the rich history of the AJDC, especially since this summer marks their 20th anniversary."

Weekly Gem
Teddy Ruxpin has met his match. British department store giant Selfridges will begin selling teddy bears by couture label Steiff next month that are a far cry from bears of old. The limited-edition bear, which will be part of the store's first-ever toy collection, features eyes made of emerald surrounded with diamonds and a 24k gold snout. The bear's fur is entwined with gold leaf and each will come with a Mont Blanc pen and an ink pot filled with liquid gold. Hoping to catch consumers' eyes as a winter holiday purchase, it is the gift of choice for discerning toddlers and for parents who just happen to have $85,785 to burn.
