The theme for the HRD Awards 2009 Internationale Diamantjuweelwedstrijd is "Once upon a time."
Yes, We Said 'Diamantjuweelwedstrijd'

You probably can't pronounce it, but if you design diamond jewelry, you'll want to give it a shot. Diamantjuweelwedstrijd isn't a European amusement park or a semicentennial celebration, but it is significant for diamond jewelry designers interested in recognition.

The HRD Awards 2009 Internationale Diamantjuweelwedstrijd is a global competition sponsored by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC is the former Hoge Raad voor Diamant in Belgian, or The Diamond High Council in English). AWDC aims to promote innovative diamond designs and itself as a "center of excellence," according to the contest's Web site. Further inspiration should come from the "Once upon a time" theme for entrants, who can be professionals, hobbyists, students, teachers, and retail jewelers, but not manufacturers (though individuals can be sponsored and their designs made by third parties).

More rules maintain that only registered Belgian diamantaires may sponsor stones; designers and dealers must be matched by AWDC; material costs can't exceed 12,500 euro; entries must feature between 1 ct. t.w. diamonds and 25 cts. t.w. diamonds; fancy stones can play only minor roles in designs; rough diamonds are off-limits; and metals used should be precious, though "new and innovative materials" (palladium?) are OK. Whew!

If you manage to get through all the red tape, you could secure the first prize of 5,000 euro and a permanent home (for the design) in a Belgian museum. Five finalists are also honored; no details on their accolades, though you can log onto www.hrdawards.com for more information.

The deadline for sketches or photos of models is, coincidently, Oct. 31, 2008, America's day to revel in make-believe.

The news reports you've been reading about an alleged engagement ring bought by actor Nick Cannon for Mariah Carey are true: Jacob & Co. confirmed to JCKstyle that Cannon bought a $2.5 million diamond engagement ring for the songstress. The platinum ring features 17 cts. t.w. diamonds, including a 10 ct. fancy, light pink square-emerald-cut diamond center, 58 intense pink diamonds, and two half-moon-cut rocks. It's not known whether or not the stones (or the unusual pair's romance) bear Forevermarks.
