World’s Largest Bourse Opens in India

The Bharat Diamond Bourse – billed as the world’s largest –
opened in Mumbai, India, Oct. 17.

Spread over 20 acres, the bourse complex will house around 2,500 small and
large diamond traders, as well as service providers that cater to the gem and jewelry
trade. When fully operational, the Bourse is expected to have an inflow of
about 20,000 people daily.

“This bourse is going to be an international world-class
diamond trading hub with facilities like banking, freight forwarding,
consolidation, insurance, security surveillance, all in the same complex,” said
Anoop Mehta, president, Bharat Diamond Bourse. “This undoubtedly will put the
Indian diamond industry on the international map on par with the global powers.
 … With the inauguration of this
Bourse, we will now be equipped with the best infrastructure in the world.”

Guests at the opening included Anand Sharma, India’s
minister for commerce and industry.
