Tous Brought the Best Kind of Folly to Baselworld

You can always count on Baselworld to be a hotbed of high jewelry debuts and magnificent new state-of-the-art timepieces. It’s all incredibly exhilarating—and so dignified—but also just…very serious.

And that’s part of what makes Bonjour Senorita, the spring/summer 2017 collection that Tous launched at the show, so refreshing. This season, the Barcelona, Spain–based brand looked to the colorful streets of Havana for inspiration while adding a pop of Parisian chic here and there, for jewels that are all about optimism, joie de vivre, and the frivolity one needs to indulge in now and again. In other words, the jewelry equivalent of a burst of confetti. Or a fruity, frothy cocktail garnished with a gazillion paper umbrellas.

But it’s not all bubble gum, hearts, and rainbows. As the face of the brand, Gwyneth Paltrow lends Tous plenty of style cred, and her contract with Tous was recently renewed for another two years. The Goop founder and actress has helped to cast Tous’ designs in a more sophisticated light, and that includes the ubiquitous teddy bear motif that has served as the brand’s signature since 1985. Clearly, there’s a time for antique tiaras and diamond-encrusted watches, but right now, doesn’t a little bear wearing a fruit headdress feel more like it?
