Stars as a design motif are in the fashion spotlight this season—scattered in lavish abundance on dresses both short and long, dangling as charms from handbag chains, and adorning a variety of jewelry styles.
The most recent magazine cover to promote the trend is the September 2011 issue of InStyle, which pictures singer Beyoncé wearing a short, star-studded Dolce & Gabbana dress and necklace.
The cover of the June-July 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar presented an earlier shower of stars in the form of a long chiffon dress by Dolce & Gabbana modeled by singer Britney Spears.
One of the opening pages of the July 2011 issue of Elle magazine featured actress Emma Stone wearing lambskin overalls from Chloe over a polka-dotted bra from Mimi Holiday, accessorized with chunky Dolce & Gabbana star-shaped earrings dotted with yet more stars.
If you’re seeing a trend within the trend here, it is the omnipresence of Dolce & Gabbana. It seems that the fall collection of Dolce & Gabbana is almost single-handedly responsible for attracting the fashion press and keeping this motif in the public eye.
Dolce & Gabbana itself has run a series of ads featuring the star-themed fashions and jewelry. Here’s one from the August 2011 issue of Vogue. Along with huge star drop earrings, the chain on the handbag in the women in green is studded with dangling star charms.
Here’s a portion of the Dolce & Gabbana ad running in the September 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar that features drop earrings with smaller scale star-themed detail.
Taking a lighter view of fall fashion trends, the August 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar featured a version of the animated character Smurfette, “star” of the movie The Smurfs, wearing star-shaped drop earrings and a star-studded cuff bracelet, along with a star-accented handbag, all from Dolce & Gabbana.
Not every fashion spread picking up on the celestial theme features Dolce & Gabbana, but the exceptions thus far are fairly few. A runway shot of a dress, necklace and earrings accented with stars from Dolce & Gabbana anchored a page featuring “celestial shifts and constellation-gazing accessories” in the July 2011 issue of Elle. The earrings pictured are from Chanel and feature diamond, sapphires, South Seas pearls, and rock crystal.
The cover of the August 2011 issue of Town & Country pictured a Prabal Gurung chemise and Susan van der Linde sun hat worn with Fred Leighton diamond and white gold star pendant earrings.
The September 2011 issue of InStyle features a star-shaped sapphire and platinum pendant necklace from Tiffany & Co. on a page also reporting on the latest jewelry styles from Temple St. Clair and from James Banks Design. The magazine features the latter designer’s necklace of customizable glass bulbs that can be filled with gemstones and a selection of charms including tiny sterling silver stars.
