Quiz: Can You Tell Which May 2013 Jewelry News Headlines Are Real or Fake?
Now that the majority of the industry is in recovery mode from this year’s JCK Las Vegas show, it’s a good time to catch up on the top jewelry headlines from May 2013.
Can you tell which headlines from last month are fake? Take the quiz to find out!
1. Richline Group Acquires the Diamond Planet
False. Warren Buffett’s Richline Group hasn’t purchased anything in space yet, but I’m sure it’s working on it. However, it did agree in principle to acquire the Honora brand.
2. James Bond’s Breitling Top Time Watch To Be Auctioned at Christie’s
True. Christie’s will indeed auction James Bond’s Breitling Top Time watch, worn by Sean Connery in the 1965 movie Thunderball, during its Pop Culture sale on June 26. No word if it comes with a watered down martini.
4. $1 Million-Plus in Chopard Jewels Stolen From Cannes Film Festival
True. While the movie Bling Ring was stealing the show at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, which opened May 15, real-life thieves were stealing Chopard jewelry from a hotel safe.
6. Marilyn Monroe’s Earrings Set Record at Sotheby’s
False. Right jewelry, wrong sex symbol. Screen legend Gina Lollobrigida may have turned heads during her days as a sex symbol in the 1950s and 1960s, but her jewels were the center of attention at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva on May 14, including pearl and diamond earrings that went for a record $2.39 million.
7. J.C. Penney Follows Up Apology Commercial With ‘We Obviously Don’t Know What We’re Doing’
False. Although the fake headline might be more accurate, the company followed up its apology campaign with a “thank you” commercial that thanked customers for getting the retail chain back on track (which in reality, hasn’t really happened either).
True. “If gold went to $1,000, I wouldn’t be a buyer,” the “Orcale of Omaha” said at a press conference, according to reports. “If it went to $800, I wouldn’t be a buyer. It’s never interested me.” Gold price prognosticators set their hair on fire shortly after hearing the news.
True, because why not? The hotel’s “Great Gatsby” package allows guest to accessorize like Daisy Buchanan, offering an Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry Art Deco shagreen and onyx cuff (valued at $3,800), accompanied by a personal note from Ivanka Trump.
10. Runners, Cyclists Sleep Through JFC Charity Race
False. On May 30, shortly after sunrise, 165 JCK showgoers gathered at Mandalay Bay Convention Center to run, bike, or walk in Jewelers for Children’s inaugural Rings of Strength tour. Some of them may even have showered before hitting the show floor!
