Market Visit: Lana Jewelry

I visited Lana Fertelmeister, president and designer, Lana Jewelry, during her trunk show last week at Neiman Marcus in King of Prussia, Pa. I’d met Lana’s parents during the Oro di Roma show a few weeks ago, as her father, Naum Fertelmeister, serves as the company’s vice president.

Lana launched her company six years ago after commissioning a jeweler to make a pair of earrings—her Upside Down hoops—that she designed. The pair got noticed, and orders started coming in from admirers. “I wanted to create a hip, classic style of jewelry that a woman would not want to take off,” she explains.

Signature Upside Down hoops with emeralds, $320.

Another goal: not to send customers into sticker shock with prices, so Fertelmeister uses only 14k gold. “I work with 14k gold for three reasons,” she adds. “I don’t like the color of higher-karat gold, [14k] rose gold looks pink as opposed to red, and [14k gold] pieces are more durable—and most of our pieces are delicate.”

Ballerina necklace, $730.

Empress earrings, $925.

Bomond necklace with emeralds, $2,550.

Styles are primarily fabricated, as is evident from the sleek high-polished mirror finish that is Lana Jewelry’s signature style, and, which Fertelmeister describes as “sexy ‘70s flair.”

Bomond earrings with emeralds, $1,045.

Sunrise hoops, $750.

Pieces often feature a mix of rose, white, and yellow gold, and suggested retail prices start at just $165 for a plain metal version of her signature hoops. Diamonds and emeralds are the only stones used in designs, but inspiration for styles come from love and family (Fertelmeister made a nameplate necklace featuring her fiancé’s name, Rob), Russian roots (she was born in Moscow), and favorite places like Miami.

White Night hoops, $750.

Tzarina necklace, $1,150.

Sable lariat, $730.

Miami necklace, $2,850.

Moscow hoops with emeralds, $1,150.

Luck and Love ring, $525.

Miami bracelets, $975 for three.

And my favorite, the Kinetic ring, $1,310.
