Jewelry Trends at the 2010 Golden Globes and SAG Awards, Part 2–Rubies

Step aside, emeralds, now that you’ve joined diamonds to make a dazzling impression. The corundum family has arrived: Rubies and sapphires are back in town. Pearls also pleased; diamonds and other gemstones in a range of hues provided delight. Actresses with warm skin tones embraced yellow gold. The public has learned a new term: sautoir. And creative uses of jewelry once again made some of the most intriguing statements on the red carpet this year at the 2010 Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

The ascendance of rubies, in particular, was evident at the awards shows.

Although Nicole Kidman reportedly wore Fred Leighton diamond bracelets punctuated with emeralds with her pastel peach Nina Ricci gown at the Golden Globes, I much preferred her style at the SAG Awards, where she wore a vibrant, multi-color gown by Oscar de la Renta with an exuberant selection of yellow gold necklaces and bracelets, including a Fred Leighton 19th century gold necklace worn together in combination with what was described as an Indian ruby and diamond pendant-style necklace. The warmer, deeper hues suited Kidman so much better, in my opinion, than the prior week’s pastel ensemble. She positively glowed.

With her scarlet Louis Vuitton gown at the Golden Globes, Zoe Saldana combined jewelry from two designers, ruby and diamond rings and bracelet by Neil Lane, and an exceptional pair of platinum and ruby earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.

Mariah Carey rocked enormous ruby and diamond earrings by Kwiat with her red gown at the SAG Awards. She also wore diamond and ruby bracelets from Le Vian along with a signature diamond butterfly brooch at her waist.
Rubies were combined not only with red gowns, but with a range of colors, to wonderful effect:

Red & Yellow

I especially loved the combination of Martin Katz ruby and diamond earrings with the muted golden yellow ruffled gown by Luis Antonio worn by Jennifer Morrison at the Golden Globes.

Not all red and yellow together is as successful, however; Jeremy Irons’ bow tie worn with tinted eyeglasses to the SAG Awards, looked a bit too much circus, not enough gala.

Red & Orange

Diane Kruger showed off her hourglass figure to perfection at the SAG Awards in what has variously been described as a pumpkin or marigold-colored gown by Jason Wu together with ruby and diamond drop earrings and a set of ruby and diamond bracelets by Harry Winston.

Red & Magenta

Anna Kendrick wore a strapless Alberta Ferretti magenta-hued gown with a Kwiat flower-shaped bracelet with ruby center.

Red & Green

Amy Adams, several months pregnant, wore a beautiful dark green Carolina Herrera dress to the Golden Globes accented with a ruby brooch from Herrera’s personal collection.

There is more to report on the creative uses of color and adornment. To be continued. . . .
