Jewelry school begins residence gemology classes

The California Institute of Jewelry Training (CIJT) will hold its first Fellow of the Gemmological Association (FGA) Foundation gemology course beginning March 1, 2004. Gregory E. Sherman, FGA, DGA, GG, will direct the program at the Sacramento, Calif., school, which offers programs in gemology, jewelry manufacturing arts and jewelry design.

CIJT is an “Allied Teaching Center” of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) and has been in business since 1979. The new Foundation Course in Gemology from the Gem-A provides a broad-based introduction to gemological theory and its practical application. The course is designed to prepare students for the “Gem-A Diploma Course in Gemology,” which is scheduled to start in June 2004. In the Foundation Course, students will work with a variety of cut and rough stones and learn how to use all the standard gemological instruments.

Sherman said class size will be kept small to foster a better educational experience.
