International Diamond Laboratories has appointed An Smet as its chief operations and technology officer. The Dubai-based company said the appointment “underlines that research and development is the backbone of the labs’ strategy.”

An Smet has 15 years international management experience in leading technology, engineering and production companies in Asia, Europe, and South America. Before joining IDL, she was general manager of Punch Metals, a global manufacturer of high precision metal components and graphic technology, and director of Seghers Better Technology, a global technology group. Both companies operated extensive R&D and laboratory operations around the world.

At IDL, she will oversee the lab operations and the research and development department.

“We are currently finalizing the testing of new technology that will revolutionize diamond grading. It will allow IDL to introduce scientifically based standards and thus to become a truly consistent diamond lab.” Smet said.

IDL’s R&D Department comprises physicists, engineers, researchers, and designers with experience inside and outside the diamond industry. With other projects in the pipeline, it will partner up with leading institutes around the world to become a new knowledge center in the diamond business.
