Getting a Lock on Grids

The perennially popular combination black and white is taking on a particularly graphic effect this season with an abundance of eye-catching grid designs. Jewelry is inspired by these repetitive motifs as well.

The January 2013 issue of Marie Claire looks to Edie Sedgwick at Andy Warhol’s Factory in the 1960s as inspiration for a multi-page spread featuring sharp graphics in stripes and grids. The striking graphics are complemented with a black and white diamond necklace from Piaget and a ring of 18k white gold, black ceramic, and diamonds from Chanel Fine Jewelry.

The second page of the Marie Claire spread features primarily striped designs, including a black and white bracelet from Cartier and long drop earrings of white gold, diamonds, and black spinels from Piaget.

The third page of the Marie Claire spread features a wide white calfskin and black plated steel wristwatch from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière and a black and white lacquered cuff bracelet from Hermès.

The January 2013 issue of Allure features a particularly bold example of a black and white grid in the form of a silk top and barely-there skirt from Louis Vuitton, pictured with earrings, wristwatch, headband, shoes, and bag all from Louis Vuitton.

The December 2012 issue of Vogue pictures a model in a Michael Kors ikat windowpane jacket and shorts worn with a T by Alexander Wang bandeau. She wears a Cape Cod TGM watch with a black leather strap and a sterling silver spiral Vertige ring, both from Hermès.

A wide black ceramic and white diamond cuff bracelet from Chanel Fine Jewelry is featured in the December 2012 issue of Marie Claire, along with a spiral take on graphic earrings design in 18k white and black gold with diamonds from Simon G Jewelry.

The October 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar pictures Michael Kors with a model wearing his grid-patterned top and pants. She also wears a pair of matching cuffs from Michael Kors and strappy shoes also from the designer.

Zigzags and graphic grids are paired in the October 2012 issue of Marie Claire. The magazine features a black and white cuff from Noir Jewelry; a geometric black cuff from Charming Charlie, and a pair of watches with graphic faces from May28th.

Not all grids take an extreme black-and-white approach. The January 2013 issue of Vogue combines a dark pink and white woven-check top from Chanel with a Jonathan Saunders skirt adorned with PVC paillettes to create “a quirky clash of both texture and hue.” The drop earrings, which echo the scale of the patterns in the garments, are from Prada.

A bright plaid pattern of a glass-stone cuff in gold plate from Kate Spade New York catches the eye in this photograph from the December 2012 issue of Real Simple. Also pictured is a Jennifer Fisher brass cuff; a Frangos Swarovski crystal multicolor serpentine cuff in brass plate; and a Jody Candrian lapis cuff in brass.

A variety of grid-like designs composed of hexagons, rectangles and squares are featured in the October 2012 issue of Allure. A brightly colored Hermès bracelet of concentric circles and a Kenneth Jay Lane cuff with a multicolor geometric design are bracelets featured to coordinate with the geometric print fabrics.
