Emmys 2017: ‘Veep’ Is Really a Show About Jewelry

So I’m a little late to the Veep party. But having recently binge-watched all six seasons of the HBO comedy at a fast clip, I’ve quickly become a wide-eyed devotee of the show. Two things that kept me glued to the screen? Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character Selina Meyer’s zingers (absurdly, wonderfully filthy) and her jewelry (distractingly good). From Tahitian pearls to her signature stack of gold bangles, the jewels are as flawless as Veep’s protagonist is flawed.

As Louis-Dreyfus accepted the award for Lead Actress in a Comedy (her sixth consecutive win) at the 2017 Emmy Awards on Sunday night, I was reminded that Louis-Dreyfus herself has exquisite taste in jewelry, with a long list of memorable red carpet appearances under her belt.

This year, with help from stylist Cristina Ehrlich, she wore a form-fitting Carolina Herrera Resort 2018 gown with a golden-yellow floral appliqué that slinked around her curves.

We’re stumped as to the maker of he swingy Art Deco or Art Deco-inspired emerald danglers and I like to imagine that they’re something from her personal collection. (We know the actress has a thing for emeralds—particularly those from Irene Neuwirth.)

On Veep, we likely have to credit Gary Walsh, Selina’s long-suffering attaché for her wardrobe choices.

Cartier and Mikimoto have loaned pieces to the show’s costume department. And then there was this insane rivière necklace made of citrine.

Starting around Season 3, under new costume design direction from Kathleen Felix Hager, edgier jewelry has crept into the narrative.

Mainly, and frequently, by one Cathy Waterman, offering an uncommonly chic complement to the rotating supply of Carolina Herrera, Victoria Beckham, and Alexander McQueen on the set.

“If there is going to be a tight shot, I’m looking at the neckline and checking to see if the dress feels too bare and needs a necklace,” Felix Hager told InStyle last year. “Selina is a character that thinks about fashion and cares about the image that she is projecting, so I always keep that in mind.

“Selina likes to be the shiniest object in the room.”

As it happens, Veep won the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for the third time Sunday night. No official nods to Felix Hager for the costume design (not even a nomination) but as far the show’s jewelry is concerned? Bravo. I can’t wait to see what Selina’s jewelry situation looks like for Season 7.
