Diamond District Tries to Lure Same-Sex Couples

New York City’s 47th Street Business Improvement
District held a press event on July 21 to encourage same-sex couples to shop in
the “Diamond District,” in anticipation of New York state’s first same-sex
weddings on July 24.

“We want people to know we are here and open for business,”
executive director Michael Grumet told JCK.
“We welcome everybody.”

Speakers at the press conference, held on 47th
Street, included Manhattan Borough president Scott Stringer; NYC Department of
Consumer Affairs deputy commissioner of external affairs Fran Freedman;
president of the 47th Street BID Board of Directors Harvey Nagin; and Grumet

“It’s great to see the merchants here on 47th Street
stepping up to offer their services and expertise to the thousands of same sex
couples who will tie the knot in New York this coming week and for years to
come,” said Stringer in a statement.
