De Beers was declared the “winner” at the Association of Chartered
Certified Accountant’s annual sustainability reporting awards ceremony in
Johannesburg on Oct. 21.

De Beers’ “Report to Society” is the first to be recognized
by ACCA in this way.  Previously
ACCA has only given awards on a “best in sector” basis. However, in this
instance, ACCA judges felt the De Beers 2009 report to be “head and shoulders
above the competition” and, as a result, merited more significant
recognition. 

“The cornerstone of this report, and what makes it stand
out, is the risk assessment framework…a reflection of the company’s core risk
view rather than a sustainability report side-show,” the judges said.
