Canadian Miner Will Sell Gems Online

Canadian miner Dominion Diamond Corp. plans online sales of CanadaMark-branded gems, its spokesman confirmed to JCK.

The site will be business-to-business, said spokesman Richard Chetwode, and its launch is planned around the JCK Show in Las Vegas.

The news was first reported in Bloomberg.com. Company CEO Bob Gannicott told the news service that selling gems online would give the company insight into market prices it lost after selling Harry Winston in 2013.

CanadaMark was developed by miner BHP and was purchased by Dominion along with the BHP-owned Ekati mine in 2013. The mark certifies a diamond’s Canadian origin.

Dominion owns the Ekati mine as well as 40 percent of the Diavik mine. Both are located in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
