5 Recent Covers of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”

If the diamond business has a musical best friend—judging from how many times it’s been used at industry functions, in ads, and as hold music—it’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” And while Marilyn Monroe’s rendition is the most iconic, this 53-year-old warhorse has attracted a surprising number of modern singers, who apparently can’t resist the lure of crooning about square-cuts, pear shapes, and why you stand straighter at Tiffany’s:

1. Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! (2001)

In perhaps the best-known modern version, Kidman mashes up Diamonds with Madonna’s Material Girl:

2. Beyoncé (2007)

While technically touting a perfume, the industry came out of this ad for Emporio Armani’s Diamonds fragrance smelling pretty good:

3. Blake Lively in Gossip Girl (2012)

For the show’s 100th episode, its heroine recreated Monroe doing Diamonds in a dream sequence, with a little bit of drama thrown in.

4. Nicole Scherzinger (2007)

Former Pussycat Dolls singer Scherzinger put yet another spin on the Monroe version in the CBS TV special Movies Rock—and even updated it with a reference to “Neil Lane.”

5. Christina Aguilera in Burlesque (2010)

The critically panned musical features what we have to call a semi-cover: The first chorus is sung by Marilyn Monroe, the second by Christina Aguilera.

BONUS

The Puppini Sisters (2011)

While not as famous as the other singers noted above, this English group’s version of Diamonds, with Andrews Sisters harmonies, may be the best of all:
