Ugly Betty's America Ferrera at the Emmy Awards
Emmy's Red Carpet Report

The financial crisis wasn't exactly the ideal backdrop for the Emmy Awards this week, and the red carpet didn't sparkle quite as one might hope. Hollywood stylists seemed to rein things in a bit when it came to jewelry, choosing the tried and true, rather than taking splashy chances. They did, however, go for color in both gowns and jewels, and try some new takes on old ideas. Among the best looks:

Heavy Drop Earrings. If there was one silhouette that wasn't shy, it was the drop earring. Chunky (sometimes clunky) earrings were sported by Heidi Klum, Debra Messing, and Brooke Shields.

Necklaces. Not as many or as bold as JCKstyle hoped, but stars like America Ferrera, Nicolette Sheridan, and Jennifer Love Hewitt dazzled in structured pieces.

Hoops. An unexpected red carpet star, medium-size hoops were favored by the likes of Cheryl Hines and Julie Benz.

Stacked Bracelets. Nothing new here, just more of the same mix-and-match look we've seen for the past year (especially in diamond varieties). Cynthia Nixon and Tina Fey were among those who chose this safe style.

Glittery Dresses. While celebs seemed to pare down the jewelry, they stepped up the adornment on dresses. Metallic (Christina Applegate and Kathy Griffin) and sparkly or jeweled fabrics (Felicity Huffman, Kate Walsh, and Holly Hunter) were big winners.
