Cuff
Cuff by William Schraft
Trends From the Big Apple

It wasn’t exactly a busy show, but designers at JA New York this week tried to keep a sunny outlook. Many exhibitors reported the silver lining that, although their usual accounts gave them fair warning that they were pinching their pennies, the time that would have been spent playing catch-up with familiar faces was instead used to make new contacts and show new jewelry. Among that being shown?

Large Cuffs
And not necessarily jewel encrusted. Bold, intricate cuffs with openwork detail and one statement stone prevailed in cases at the show.

Ethnocentrism
Many designers are looking to their own ancestry for inspiration and putting a new spin on cultural traditions to set them apart from the pack.

Religious Imagery
Sometimes going back to basics is the wisest tactic, and religious themes remain an old standby. Designers, however, mix things up by deliciously blurring the line between obvious symbolism and luxurious accessorizing.

Closure Consciousness
Every little detail counts and designers are realizing that even the slightest design flaw can break a sale. Closures are becoming less utilitarian and more about signature style.

Weekly Gem
You think your third quarter was rough? Jacob the Jeweler, whom you will recall was sentenced to two and a half years in jail last month for lying to federal investigators probing a drug ring, has decided to start getting his affairs in order. First order of business? Filing papers in the Manhattan Supreme Court alleging that former Fugees singer Wyclef Jean doesn’t pay his bills. According to papers, Jean owes the company $319,680. Among the luxury items he allegedly bought are a $225,000 Chopard watch, 4.85 ct. diamond stud earrings that cost $30,000, and a $12,000 diamond Jesus head.
