Double Duty for Diamonds

Summer is a sleepy time for the jewelry industry. New collections launched during the Las Vegas shows, and now many of the designers and buyers are taking well-earned vacations. However, jewelry's showiest segment, diamonds, aims to keep a precious buzz brewing in the thick summer air by working a little overtime.

For example, diamonds took part this week in the finale of NBC's "Today Throws a Wedding," with viewers voting online for wedding bands to complement the winning couple's existing diamond engagement ring. Of the four available brands, platinum pieces from Kwiat's Fidelity collection—hers with melee—secured the most votes.

Diamonds add panache to the year-old social-networking and dating site dubbed Diamond Lounge—a name used to imply status and wealth. The venue calls itself a "dating and networking [site] for successful and attractive people," heavily screens potential members, and claims that users include celebrities and models. Meanwhile, a pair of diamond-studded jeans and a purse—for $10,000 and $1.9 million, respectively—dazzle the accessories arena: Pants made by Key Closet boast 1.00 ct. t.w. diamonds on the back pockets, and the pocketbook—the handiwork of Japanese designer Ginza Tanaka—is set with more than 2,000 stones.

Finally, diamonds appear from another, decidedly gross locale: the umbilical cord of an English newborn. Rather, the parents aim to convert their, um, memento into a diamond with the help of Phoenix Diamonds, a company that turns cremains into real diamonds.
