London Calling

Newly created Coutts London Jewellery Week is taking the idea of yet another jewelry show to a new level. At its citywide London premiere, held June 11–15, 2008, the trade and consumers alike were treated to four days of festivities including runway shows, collection launches, educational seminars, parties, and more.

Sponsor Coutts & Co., the U.K. private banking arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland, said "visitors will be able to experience the passion, style, and inspiration behind one of London's oldest trades," according to a statement; who better to do so than a bank whose services "are tailored to suit wealthy individuals who often have complex financial needs"? Meanwhile, the venue was organized by the economic development agency City Fringe Partnership, public relations firm The Communication Group, and additional funds came from government organization the London Development Agency.

English veterans and newcomers, as well as some international brands (Roberto Coin was on the exhibitor list), participated. While London natives simply opened their store doors, visitors rented space. Patrons included Laurence Graff, founder, Graff; Jonathan Kendall, director of international and trade marketing, De Beers; as well as JCKstyle darlings Stephen Webster and Shaun Leane. Goals were universal: sales.

"This event profiles London as a global destination for jewelry design," Michael Hayman, CEO, The Communication Group, told the press. "The event is to get the very best of London together," he said. "We don't think there is any other international city doing this."

Weekly Gem
Luxury Web site Portero.com showed off pieces in its 200-bag collection of vintage Chanel purses this week. The intent was to drive interest to the site's 11-day auction of the bags (which started yesterday). The least expensive item up for bid was a leather train case tote worth $1,000, the priciest was an alligator tote worth $22,000, and JCKstyle editors can afford to buy exactly 0 of them.
