Crystallize Me

Swarovski wants you to create your own style—well, as long as it includes its namesake crystals, that is. Participants in the brand’s annual Create Your Style Design Contest 2008 – North & South America should "be naturally inspired," according to details.

In Swarovski-speak, this means you must cast a crystallized eye on entries (a piece of jewelry, an accessory, a home decor object, or a paper craft), which must be 80 percent Swarovski crystal. The remaining 20 percent may be wood, metal, or other materials, besides machine-cut crystals. Rules state that entries must be made entirely by participants (no help, that’s cheating), who are encouraged to utilize skills in sewing, gluing, knitting, or any other keen craft talent worth showing off. Submissions must also be made in one category only—professional, amateur, or student. And just to be sure that everyone gets a fair shot at winning a cool (figurative) crystal crown, Swarovski employees and family members are not eligible to participate.

The deadline for submissions is May 16, 2008. Winners can expect trips to Wattens, Austria, to tour the surreal Swarovski Crystal World, a fantasy theme park and shop that’s fascinating, and, very Alice in Wonderland-esque; gift certificates to buy Swarovski crystals; or, tuition money for students. Semifinalists get—what else?—gift certificates for Swarovski products to keep crystal-loving fans in a perpetually creative crystal loop.

Weekly Gem
Designer John Galliano has joined forces with Italian brand Morellato to bring consumers a signature line of both watches and jewelry (jewels premiered at BaselWorld; stay tuned for watches next year). Galliano’s jewelry, however, holds clues to what the watches will be, as he tries to blur the lines between watches and jewelry. "The Galliano watch is very feminine, very delicate; it’s more like a jewel than a watch," he said. "I was really inspired to create a watch that would go with a beautiful evening dress, as well as add to your day."
