One of several stops on a tour celebrating Tahitian pearl jewelry design was an event honoring the North American prize winners of the Tahitian Pearl Trophy during the JA New York show this week.

The Tahitian Pearl Trophy is an annual design contest run by Perles de Tahiti, the official promotion body for cultured pearls in French Polynesia. Unlike other prizes, which may have a single ceremony or event, Perles de Tahiti gives artists from more than 36 countries the opportunity to have their work seen throughout the year with events like Monday's, which was hosted by the Cultured Pearl Association of America, the U.S. arm of Perles de Tahiti.

Trophy winner Evelyn Huang said of the event: "I think it is wonderful that Perles de Tahiti and the CPAA hold a competition and event like this. Not only does it give new designers in North America an opportunity to challenge their creative side but it is also much welcomed recognition for a person starting their foray into the industry. It is greatly appreciated and speaks volumes about the care and commitment that the associations have toward nurturing talent."

If this all sounds vaguely familiar, some may remember a similar gala event held recently in Tucson. This multiple-celebration tactic keeps winners, and their designs, in the fore of everyone's minds all year and, in a sense, makes the Tahitian Pearl Trophy the prize that keeps on winning.

Weekly Gem
News reports state that Hang Fung Gold Technology in Hong Kong is looking to cash in on high gold prices by melting down its 24k gold bathroom fixtures (including a toilet, wastepaper baskets, statues, and other accessories). While many are heading to the smelter to reportedly free up funds for the retailer's expansion into China, the throne is safe, apparently, thanks to its popularity among tourists.
