Nicole Kidman illustrated the significant necklace trend at the Academy Awards in this layered piece by L'Wren Scott.
Oscar Jewels

After being at risk of cancellation during the Hollywood writers' strike, the Oscars went on as planned Sunday and, in celebration, the stars seemed to twinkle extra brightly on the red carpet. Starlets went for drama befitting Tinseltown's biggest event of the year, favoring gowns in either classic black or rich jewel tones, especially red. Oscar jewels were similarly statement making. Styling largely carried over from last year, but with fresh new tweaks. Here's a sampling of the strongest trends:

Statement necklaces. Strapless gowns with sweetheart necklines were the perfect backdrop for the continued comeback of necklaces this year. Multilayer looks were popular, as were statement collar shapes.

Multiple bracelets. The look is becoming less a trend than a tradition in Hollywood as stars again mixed and matched bracelets in different shapes, sizes, and gems.

Jewel tones. Richly hued dresses called for similar gemstones. Replacing the past few seasons' pastel-colored diamonds were complementary ruby and sapphire looks.

Drop earrings. Detailed one-shoulder necklines put a focus on earrings, which trended toward either long and bold (often in pear or teardrop silhouettes) or short single-stone diamond drops.

Weekly Gem
Many stars donned necklaces, but none as loudly as Nicole Kidman. Kidman, who has a long history of making major fashion statements at the Oscars, lit up the stage in an extraordinary rough and polished diamond sautoir necklace by fashion designer L'Wren Scott. The piece contained 7,645 diamonds, totaling nearly 1,400 cts.
