Emotions on Display

Oftentimes, emotions cloud judgment and interfere with relationships—pesky problems that can be cured with daily doses of antidepressants, right? Well, if pills aren't your bag, get to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum's newest exhibition called Campana Brothers Select: Works From the Permanent Collection, a place where passionate patrons are free to unleash their fervor.

Fernando and Humberto Campana, siblings who design provocative furniture, were tapped to curate a display of their choosing; they picked objects dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries, all comprising disparate ideas and uncommon materials (their trademark style). According to the museum, "Visitors are invited to experience how the designs that the Campanas assembled elicit emotions, a visceral response prompted by the objects themselves." Say the Campanas, "All of the items selected (from illustrations to furniture to jewelry) have in common a certain dreamy state of mind and perception, a touch of humor, and an intrinsic relation to the material."

The exhibition kicked off last week with a question and answer session with the brothers and another famous Brazilian—Roberto Stern of H.Stern, which collaborated on a jewelry collection with the pair almost 10 years ago.

As you might expect, the Campanas' unbridled creativity calls for consistently specific methods of executing projects: "We decide to simply adopt the basic criterion of 'I like that'—just as we usually do while we are creating," the pair told the press about the exhibit.

Check out the exhibit now until Sept. 28, 2008.
