Runway Jewels

Another New York Fashion Week has come and gone. Along with the who-attended-what-show drama and designer-vs.-critic passive aggressiveness, the week foretold a season that is pared down, grown up, and decidedly jewelry friendly.

Surprisingly, collections that showed restraint (credited to the economic downturn) nevertheless came highlighted by jewels, an unusual turn on the runways in any season. Many designers layered on jewelry for good reason, as fall clothing silhouettes are the perfect backdrop for accessorizing. Some of the top fashion trends that will dictate jewelry demand:

High necklines. From turtlenecks to buttoned-up blouses, the season's covered-up tameness calls for long necklaces. Think medallions and other pendants, layers of pearls or beads, and heavy gold chains.

Rich hues. Purple and burgundy made strong showings, along with golden yellow and vibrant greens and blues, especially mixed with brown or black. This saturated palette of warm tones calls for similarly saturated gems, especially in rich yellow gold.

Classic combo. The black-and-white trend, a favorite for several seasons now, shows no sign of slowing down, translating into continued demand for similar combinations in jewelry.

Chunky knits. Sportswear and separates are key for fall, with knits taking the lead. This bulkier silhouette calls for complementary jewelry like gemstone cocktail or metal-intense dome rings, bold drop earrings, and layered bangles or cuff bracelets.

Weekly Gem
The American Gem Trade Association GemFair Tucson 2008—the world's largest loose gemstone show—ended this week, but not without some drama. News reports about stolen amber and sterling silver jewelry worth $120,000, and 15-million-year-old shark teeth worth $3,000, surfaced, leaving many to wonder about the state of security at the shows, and the questionable taste of the thieves--shark teeth?
