Trend Spotting at Centurion

As JCKstyle perused the jewels at the Centurion show this week, we felt like kids on Christmas morning. We hadn't seen that much jewelry in months and were happy to see that designers, while cautious about the year ahead, had not entirely reined in the creativity.

While some of the trends (chocolate, chocolate everywhere—from pearls to diamonds) carried over from last year, we spotted several new ideas emerging for 2008. Here's a sneak peek.

Elongated shapes. Designers are taking the traditional pear and oval and stretching them for dramatic, sensual shapes in everything from cut stones to metal forms. The shapes are especially effective in drop earrings, pendants, and statement-making rings.

Opacity. The season's favorite stones are opaque. Onyx continues to be strong but high-quality opal is vying for attention as well. Also watch for dreamy moonstones accented by faceted gems.

Free-form design. A tribute to the '80s, perhaps, many designers are using free-form elements we liken to precious scribbles.

Enamel elements. Enamel serves as the ultimate way to incorporate the season's fashion trends into jewelry, with a literal translation of patterns and colors that blend with precious metals.

Weekly Gem
The latest attempt to capture Hollywood's star power comes from Ice.com, which has launched HollywoodJewels.com, a site dedicated to jewelry worn by celebrities. HollywoodJewels.com features jewels "seen in and inspired by" the movies. Given starlets' ability to drive trends, it will be an interesting venture to keep an eye on.
