Vicenza Mixes It Up

The Vicenza enterprise is undergoing revitalization, taking advantage of its long-standing rep as the harbinger of the year's trends with its new name: "First. The jewellery supremacy." The rebranding aims to engrain the show, held this week in Italy, in the minds of industry players as "the first show of business importance to jewelers," says show spokeswoman Lisa Orlandi.

Exciting stuff even if, overall, jewelry at First represented second and third takes on trends from the past few seasons. This year, however, in typical Italian fashion, the emphasis is on the sensual, with jewelry that catches the eye and encourages the touch. Here's a quick rundown of some of the trends we spotted.

Colored Gemstone Clusters: Rings and earrings are a beautiful mishmash of hues from around the world.
Mixed Tones: Don't be surprised by the continuation of the trend toward mixing yellow, rose, and white gold.
Pavé and Embossed Stones: And not just the perennial favorite of diamonds.
Texture: More designers are hammering, mixing matte with glossy finishes, and using striated surfaces for their lines.

And now you might be thinking: But what about Hollywood? Well, as the season's jewels sparkled in Vicenza, the red carpet was dark in Hollywood with the writers' strike forcing the cancellation of the traditional Golden Globes ceremony and, with it, the first celebrity fashion sightings of the year. As of now, the Oscars are still slated for Feb. 24, but stay tuned to JCKstyle for updates.
