Serving Up Jewelry

Like Ralph Lauren with his Wimbledon clothing line, the Gitanjali Group is hoping to score big with a new tennis-themed jewelry line. They served up a sneak preview of their Wimbledon Jewelry Collection on Wednesday at New York's posh National Arts Club.

The collection, set to launch this spring (just in time for Wimbledon in June), will include necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings, cufflinks, and dog tags. The first iteration of the line will have pieces in combinations of enamel, diamond, and gold, with sterling silver and stainless steel to come in future designs.

Jewelry has long been a popular (and, frequently, high-profile) on-court accessory for tennis pros—from Chris Evert's tennis bracelet in 1987 to Serena Williams's tennis earrings at this year's U.S. Open. Tennis motifs and precious materials, however, is a new match. But promoters believe it is a natural fit.

Michael Barlerin, senior vice president of marketing for Gitanjali's U.S. distributor, Jewelry Marketing Co., describes the line as "wearable by today's fashion plate tennis stars as well as the spectators that love them."

Prices range from $99 to $20,000, and the collection will first be available in Samuels jewelry stores nationwide, with a portion of all proceeds going to charitable causes.

Sure, precious baubles make you feel good, but can they actually make you healthy? According to the manufacturers of ZeroSmoke, the answer is yes. The company, which makes 24k devices that are worn on the ear and use acupressure to reportedly assist the wearer in quitting smoking, distributed them free in New York's Times Square Thursday in recognition of the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout.
