More New Jewelry From Baselworld 2014: Marbella, Shawish, and Mattia Cielo

During my last days at the fair, I spied even more incredible new pieces. Here are a few more designs that retailers should consider stocking.

Marbella

This Paris-based maker of self-adhesive jewels offers styles in 24k gold-dipped French lace with Swarovski crystals as well as 18k to 22k gold numbers set with diamonds. The firm is eight years old, has made custom styles for fashion houses such as Chanel and Dior, and sells primarily overseas—though it does have three accounts in the U.S., including AHAlife.com. The firm developed a proprietary dermatologic adhesive with a lab, and each jewel comes with a lip-gloss-like tube of adhesive that should be spread across the backside of jewels prior to wear. Prices for styles start at €28, though a karat-gold style with more than 1 carat of diamonds is available for about €7,000. These pieces are clever and particularly interesting in the light of the body-jewelry craze happening now. The costume varieties last for about 10 wears. One of the Marbella representatives stationed one on her ear, like a climber earring, and a beautiful gold one (shown) on her neckline. I like these for entry-level customers, body-jewelry enthusiasts, and for anyone who wants a feather-light look that can be worn in nontraditional ways.

Shawish

Considering this Geneva-based jeweler turned out the all-diamond diamond ring a few years ago, I suppose I shouldn’t have been too surprised to see a light-up octopus bracelet in its booth during my appointment last weekend. The bracelet had some movable components that enabled it to hug the wrist, lots of diamonds, a South Sea pearl, and a patented light technology that allowed the maker to “bring light into the stones,” according to Mohamed Shawesh, CEO and creator.

Mattia Cielo

The forces behind this Italian firm founded by Mattia Cielo and his jeweler partner Massimiliano Bonoli consistently turn out remarkable innovations, and this year is no exception. Among their offerings: carbon-fiber jewels in the Volcano collection and the M Gold collection of oversize 18k gold styles injected with a patented silicone polymer. Both lines feature magnetic clasps. Items in M Gold are especially impressive, as pieces this big are typically hollow and tend to sound tinny when touched, but the silicone fillings ensure that doesn’t happen. Plus, the next generation of the Rugiada collection of coil-motif jewelry has a more rugged, industrial look instead of a sleek one. Overall, all the collections are well received by retailers with a sophisticated clientele. “Our business has nearly doubled in the past year,” a spokesperson told me at the fair.
