The show season is officially on, and a good chunk of industry was in the Southwest last week to shop. Here's what retailers were looking for at Centurion Jewelry in Scottsdale, Ariz., earlier this week, as well as what some AGTA Tucson exhibitors have been selling since that show opened on Jan. 31.

Better-quality pyrite (in cube form, which is more rare, as opposed to pyritohedrons) sold well by the piece for $30–$225 triple key. “It’s been selling like crazy,” said Bill Gangi, owner. “On the first day alone, Japanese buyers bought 50 pieces.” This material has no treatment and is from Peru.

This material is from Brazil, has no treatment, and is cut into window-pane shapes, which are flat on both sides. It retails for $6 per carat, and sells by the piece for $30–$120 triple key.

Alaskan fossilized tree coral is 140 millions years old, according to Gangi, and has a natural blue chatoyancy, or subtle cat’s eye effect. The material comes from the bottom of the ocean, caught in the nets of cod fisherman who drag the sea floor at 3,000 feet. It retails by the gram for $12–$30 triple key.
