The rough and polished diamond sautoir necklace designed by L’Wren Scott debuted on the Red Carpet at the 80th Academy Awards. The sautoir, worn by Nicole Kidman, contains a total of 7645 diamonds including rough, faceted, and polished diamonds, which total nearly 1400 carats.

The sautoir, which was designed by Scott, produced and manufactured by Uni-Design Ltd. in Paris and India uses a wide range of shapes and cuts of diamonds. Each diamond was individually selected by the designer to fit together into an overall design. The intricate design required in excess of 6200 man hours to handcraft. Diamonds have never been used in such a truly unique way on the Red Carpet. It is a tribute to the visionary direction of the designer that such an astounding quantity of diamonds can be worn so effortlessly.

L’Wren Scott is a talented designer of both a luxury clothing line and diamond jewelry. The diamond pieces she has designed have appeared on the Oscar red carpet in the past. During her career in fashion she has established many loyal fans. Her new forays into clothing and jewelry further cement her as the style arbiter to celebrities and the fashion world alike.

Uni-Design is the jewelry manufacturing arm of the leading international diamond trading and polishing company, the Diarough Group, headquartered in Antwerp, Belgium. The world’s most renowned jewelry houses in Paris, London, and New York look to the Diarough Group to source exquisite polished gemstones, and work with them to produce the most unique and desirable pieces of jewelry, such as the extraordinary sautoir showcased at last night’s Academy Awards. Finally someone throws down the gauntlet! Brava, Nicole!

This awards season has been bare-necked and boring to say the very least best of what I’ve seen thus far.

The writer’s strike and the environmental/social issues of the day have thrown a considerable monkey wrench into this red carpet gazer’s viewing season (not to mention that I kind of hated everything that I saw in theaters this year), but I should’ve known that Nicole would come through at the Oscars.

Now, I’m not trying to undermind the gravity of the aforementioned environmental/social issues simply for my viewing and writing pleasure, but for those whose livelihood is dependent on consumers lusting after the products that they see on the red carpets, last night was a big deal. Just ask the crew of the severely scaled down Golden Globes, or that of SNL, which went live for the first time in months this past weekend once the writer’s strike ended, they’ll tell you just how much people needed “the show to go on.”

All of that being said, I predict that the jewelry industry will only feel tiny waves of growth after the Oscars.

I say tiny simply because of the ever-present R-word (recession) looming.

Don’t agree?
