Elizabeth Taylor submitted several entries she personally designed into the Jewelers Choice Awards a couple of years ago.

I know because I was the sales assistant who opened up the FedEx envelope that contained handwritten drawings and notes explaining her pieces. It was pretty heavy stuff for a kid just out of college to be reading something from the hands of a Hollywood legend.

It didn’t take me that long to realize what kind of spiritual—and for a long time, business—presence Taylor had in the jewelry industry. The outpouring of comments and hits our website received after the announcement she had died was uncanny. I’m sure that the stories we covered on the Christie’s auction of her jewelry and fashion will rank among the most popular on our site for years to come.

So if you’re new to the industry—or were born yesterday—and want to know why Elizabeth Taylor and jewelry are synonymous, here’s a good place to start.
