Shiny Silver Takes Center Stage

As noted in the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, “It’s not just about gold this season—bejeweled extras in shimmery silver are a fresh way to jazz up any outfit for day or evening.”

Pictured in the March Harper’s Bazaar is a Dior necklace of embellished translucent plastic along with a Prada evening bag and a bejeweled Celine shoe, but not a touch of genuine silver.

The March 2013 issue of People Style Watch spotlights silver, the metallic hue, in larger quantities: “On clothes and accessories, this metallic works for day or night.” The two-page spread pictures a range of silver-colored apparel, purses, and shoes, but no jewelry.

Where shiny silver jewelry is featured, one bit of advice for prospective purchasers:  All that is shiny is not silver. Quite a few designer web sites do a poor job of identifying the metal used in their jewelry. When a shiny silver-colored piece is not identified as being made of platinum, white gold, or sterling silver, the buyer should assume the piece is silver- or rhodium-plated or merely silver-toned and composed of a non-precious metal.

An ode to silver accessories is found in the February 2013 issue of People Style Watch, which includes a rhodium cuff from Style Queen in the photo. The magazine reports: “This metallic is back in full force! On everything from sexy stilettos to little clutches to bangles, it instantly amps up your look.”

In the May 2013 issue of Lucky, model and television personality Jessica Stam identifies a chunky silver-plated chain choker from Fallon as an item she’ll be wearing this spring.

Spotlighting the color Wedgwood blue, the May 2013 issue of InStyle says “cool silver jewelry complements this icy hue.” The bracelet pictured is a silver-toned link bracelet from R.J. Graziano.

“What’s In” identified in the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar includes intricate earrings, the ones pictured from Alexis Bittar, material not identified. Also pictured is a studded cuff bracelet of translucent material from Valentino Garavani and a set of tassel necklaces from Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane.

The March 2013 issue of Glamour accents a Christopher Kane ruffle-hem dress with a cuff from Ca & Lou, which produces silver-plated and silvertone brass jewelry. The model wears Christian Louboutin pumps and carries a clutch from Calvin Klein Collection.

There are also beautiful examples of genuine sterling silver jewelry featured in fashion editorial.

The March 2013 issue of InStyle features actress Jessica Paré wearing throughout the fashion spread, including the photo above, sterling silver cuffs and rings from Patricia von Musulin. Paré wears a Dior ensemble, with diamond and platinum earrings from Harry Winston, in an odd pairing with the chunky sterling silver pieces.

Actress Rebecca Hall wears a sterling silver bracelet from Hermes and a set of silver-plated rings from Vita Fede in this photo from the May 2013 issue of InStyle. Her ensemble consists of a 3.1 Phillip Lim jacket, Giambattista Valli vest, Prabal Gurung pants, and heels from Theo Bureau for Pedro Lourenco.

Model and television personality Karolina Kurkova appears in the March 2013 issue of Marie Claire wearing a sterling silver cuff from Georg Jensen with a top and pants from Balmain.

A chunky sterling silver necklace from Ippolita accessorizes a silk dress from Bottega Veneta in the March 2013 issue of Elle. The model’s boots are from Dr. Martens.

The March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar features a photo spread entitled “Silver Linings: Update your look with sleek metallic essentials” that spotlights several sterling silver designs: a ring of multiple orbs from Hermes, a sleek ring from Vhernier, and a sterling silver cuff from Robert Lee Morris. There is also a necklace of twisted silvery material from Dries Van Noten, the content of which is not identified.

Sterling silver also appears in a supporting role in jewelry designs covered by the fashion press, the background to gemstones and a wide range of materials. All on its own, sterling silver done in high polish designs unquestionably deserves center stage.
