Lapels Love Brooches

Fal-winter 2012 brings welcome fashion options for professional women, with the return of investment dressing in the form of the pantsuit. Pants are practical and comfortable, and there is nothing that can lend polish and authority to a look more than a tailored jacket. Tailored jackets have lapels, of course, and lapels are beautifully accentuated by the addition of one or more jeweled accents in the form of brooches.

An example of boardroom dressing from the September 2012 issue of Elle adds a silver brooch from Patricia von Musulin to the lapel of a jacket from Yves Saint Laurent. The model’s silver earrings are from Tiffany & Co. Her pants and belt are also from YSL; her silk chiffon blouse is from Stella McCartney.

The September 2012 issue of InStyle looks to a 1978 photograph of actress Lauren Hutton for inspiration as to how to style a menswear-inspired jacket. The magazine starts with a gray denim blazer, noting: “The contrast lapels and cuffs give this tailored piece a casual feel, while a T-shirt with mesh inserts and a sparkly brooch impart girlish flair.” The silver-plated brooch is from Sequin. The jacket is from Rachel Zoe Collection; the tee is from T by Alexander Wang. Note that the photo of Hutton does not include a brooch—the jewel adds contemporary flair.

Actress Salma Hayek is profiled in the July 2012 issue of InStyle. In the above photo, she accents the lapel of her Ralph Lauren Blue Label tweed blazer with a Verdura vintage diamond and 14k gold brooch. The rings and earrings pictured are her own. Her silk bow blouse is from Ralph Lauren Collection.

In the July 2012 issue of InStyle, actress Eva Amurri Martino wears a pair of sterling silver brooches by Patricia von Musulin on one  lapel of a Calvin Klein Collection jacket. She also wears a Calvin Klein Collection skirt, Kenzo bodysuit, belt by Meredith Wendell, and gloves from Carolina Amato.

“Chic is a confidence game. Go big or go home,” advises the July 2012 issue of Vogue, which profiles actress Emma Stone, pictured above in Dries Van Noten printed blazer, blouse and pants accented with a Stephen Jones cap and a Charvet pocket square along with a brooch by Marni pinning a sprig of lilac to the blazer, plus a necklace with a Venetian glass pendant from Behnaz Sarafpour.

Many a style of coat has lapels as well, and these too can benefit from a touch of adornment with a sufficiently sturdy, large-scale brooch.

A star brooch from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci adorns a camel-hair coat from Max Mara in this photo from the September 2012 issue of Vogue. The model’s ornate paillette-embellished top and skirt are from Nina Ricci; the bag is from Prada.

Silver brooches from Bottega Veneta adorn both the higher and lower lapels of the notched collar of a coat by Nina Ricci in this photo from the September 2012 issue of Allure. The dress is also by Nina Ricci.

The September 2012 issue of Elle styles an ensemble by Celine with a silver pin from Patricia von Musulin and silver earrings from Tiffany & Co. Her pumps are from Manolo Blahnik.

A current ad for Italian design house Missoni pictures a belted coat accented with a belt and a golden brooch.

A current ad for Ralph Lauren pictures multicolor brooches both on the lapel of a jacket and on the lapel of a wrap-style coat.

It’s not only lapels that have an affinity for brooches. These charming jewelry accents can add chic in a myriad of places. More on fashion’s rediscovery of the brooch will follow in future posts.
