Feature Presentations: Lips & Eyes

Artists are inspired by muses, and jewelry artists too may find inspiration in the style of a particular woman. This season, a number of jewelry designers are finding inspiration not from any particular woman, but from Everywoman, borrowing from and interpreting the design elements of feminine features.

In the June/July issue of Harper’s Bazaar, women’s lips and eyes interpreted in accessories are “this month’s objects of desire.” Along with a lips-adorned clutch from Diane von Furstenberg and lips-adorned shoes from Charlotte Olympia, the magazine features a lips-adorned necklace from Lanvin and a “ring that will leave them starry-eyed” from Delfina Delettrez.

These designs need to be worn with a bit of attitude. The May issue of InStyle gets it just right. Marion Fasel writes: “Pucker up! As sexy as they are surreal, these smackers are best worn with a flirty outfit and your tongue firmly in cheek.” Featured are ruby, wood, and 18k gold hoop earrings from Wendy Yue; an amethyst and 18k blackened white gold ring from Solange Azagury-Partridge; an emerald cabochon and 18k gold ring from Lorraine Schwartz; a diamond, ruby and 18k white gold necklace from Ofira, and a 14k rose gold necklace from Jennifer Fisher. Fasel notes that the style dates back to 1949 and Salvador Dali’s famous brooch of ruby lips and pearl teeth.

The June issue of Marie Claire declares: “An abundance of icy diamonds offsets red-hot lips and rubies.” With her Valentino jumpsuit and Valentino Garavani clutch, the model wears Vhernier earrings, a thin choker from Helen Yarmak, a wide choker from Roberto Coin (both chokers are obscured in the photo), and a lariat necklace depicting a cigarette dangling from red lips from Lynn Ban at Kirna Zabete. On the model’s right arm and hand she wears a watch from de Grisogono, a bracelet and ruby ring from Bulgari, a wave ring from Vhernier and a knot ring from Roberto Coin. On the model’s left arm and hand she wears a diamond bracelet from Roberto Coin, a ruby bracelet from Bulgari, a woven diamond ring from Vhernier, and two rings—a black diamond ring and a wide diamond ring—from de Grisogono.

Here’s an ad for the Solange Azagury-Partridge lips ring that appears in the May issue of Town & Country.

That ring was featured in the February issue of Elle magazine, which found precedence for the style in Andy Warhol’s Lips print from the late 1950s, along with lips graphics immortalized over the years with the help of the Rolling Stones and [Diane von Furstenberg’s] own signature pattern, calling them “omnipresent once more.” Elle elaborates: “Prada reintroduced the brand’s spring 2000 lipstick print in its resort 2012 collection, while English designer Markus Lupfer put a sequined spin on his touchstone pout design, emblazoned on a merino sweater from his new spring line.”

This season, the Evil Eye collection from Aaron Basha, seen here in an ad from the June/July issue of Harper’s Bazaar, is right on trend. Designed to ward off the harmful glare of others, these designs are bound to leave their fans starry-eyed.
