Perfectly Proper Pearls

Jewelry designs that incorporate white pearls—genuine or imitation, in a range of types, shapes and sizes—find their way into fashion pictorials month after month for good reason: They reflect a soft luminosity flattering to everyone.

In the June 2012 issue of Marie Claire, singer Florence Welch wears a Chanel dress, headband, mesh necklace, and flower ring from Chanel along with cuff bracelets from Pebble London consisting of white freshwater pearls sewn onto woven cord open cuffs. The fringed cuffs are from Alexis Bittar and the oval ring from Stephen Dweck.

The June 2012 issue of Elle styles an iconic Chanel jacket in various ways, including this classic approach that includes piled-on glass pearl necklaces that are also from Chanel. The vintage glasses and clear quilted bag are from Depuis1924.com; the sneakers and coin purse are from New York Vintage.

In its June 2012 issue, Vogue features a pair of necklaces of freshwater pearls and silk by Ann Dexter-Jones Design in this photo of model Arizona Muse, who also wears an Alexander McQueen men’s shirt and her own bracelets and ring.

On the alternate inside cover of the May 7, 2012 issue of People that names Beyoncé as “The World’s Most Beautiful Woman,” Beyoncé wears a striped blue eand white sweater with a strand of pearls and diamond stud earrings (the designers are not identified).

Actress Scarlett Johansson appears on the cover of the May 2012 issue of Vogue wearing a Prada dress from the fall 2004 collection with Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and pearl earrings.

Ladylike looks in the April 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar include this sweetheart neckline dress from Donna Karan New York worn with a Verdura bracelet, Bulgari ring, Timex watch, and necklace of what are likely glass pearls from Kenneth Jay Lane.

Among the retro looks featured in the April 2012 issue of Real Simple is this look. A structured top from Mango and skinny pants from Max Mara are made chic with the addition of resin bangles from Sequin, a Max Mara belt, a turban from Anna Sui, and a Gabriele Frantzen necklace of Czech glass and Swarovski crystals.

Real Simple also features a retro look with what “just might be the ultimate party dress” from Monique Lhuillier, worn with a Ben-Amun double-strand necklace, a Lagos triple-strand bracelet, and Badgley Mischka earrings, none of which receive a description that identifies the materials. The Ben-Amun necklace is similar to glass pearl designs by that maker; the Lagos bracelet is similar to freshwater pearl designs from that designer.

Actress Julianna Margulies demonstrates that “white-pearl” and 14k gold earrings and a matching ring from Pandora are gorgeous adornments for a cashmere cardigan from Jenni Kayne and a pair of blue jeans from MIH, as pictured in the April 2012 issue of More.

Among a display of pearly pastel accessories, the April 2012 issue of Elle features what is identified as a Swarovski crystal and pearl bracelet from CA&LOU. The designer’s website reveals that the bracelet is made of silver-plated brass, Swarovski crystals, and “plastic pearls.”

Actress Drew Barrymore, cover girl for InStyle‘s February 2012 issue, wears Harry Winston diamond and pearl earrings (with platinum) and necklace (with 18k white gold) in this photo from the issue. She also wears a Calvin Klein Collection coat; a cropped top from Carven, a Swarovski crystal-embellished leather skirt from Giles, and Christian Louboutin shoes.

From casual looks to evening jewels, as much today as ever, pearls are perfectly proper adornments.
