Primitive Motifs in Jewelry & Fashion

As perennially popular as animal prints, lavish amounts of chunky jewelry are a key element of this season’s tribal-influenced fashions. The March 2012 issue of Marie Claire describes this trend in the introduction to an eight-page fashion spread: “Michael Kors calls the trend Afriluxe, we call it an adventure: Span the globe in spring’s earthy swimwear, artisanal jewelry, and slightly savage extras.”  Each of the editorial stylings is worth studying for inspiration, especially with regard to the layering and combinations of jewelry. Among them:

A dress and belt by Lanvin are accessorized with a chain-link necklace from David Yurman, a shark-tooth necklace from Maniamania, a giraffe cuff from Roberto Coin, and a snake bracelet with ring from Anna Hu. The sandals are from Oscar de la Renta.

A swimsuit from DSquared2 and bag from Michael Kors are accompanied by a necklace, brown armband and stone cuff from Stephen Dweck; a gold cutout cuff from Robert Lee Morris; a wooden bangle from Sticks & Stones; a silver cuff from Misha Nicole, and a ring from Maniamania. The earrings are described as the model’s own.

In this third image from the March 2012 Marie Claire fashion spread, the model wears a vest and bodysuit from Donna Karan; a pendant necklace from Bulgari, a fringe necklace from Misha Nicole; a shark-tooth necklace from Maniamania, an arm band from R.J. Graziano, and a pair of cuffs from Adina Reyter.

The claw necklace pictured center far right is from Dior.

Her dress is from 10 Crosby by Derek Lam, her cardigan is from Uniqlo, her tote is from Katrin Reifeiss, and her sandals are from Michael Kors. Along the bottom of the page, Lucky features a stack of plastic bangles from vanessamooney.com (“The hands-down easiest way to tap into the tribal trend.”); and an African glass, wood and clay necklace from wendyminkjewelry.com (“Makes your preppiest button-down safari-ready.”)

The December 2011/January 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the spring preview issue, features tribal looks and notes that Michael Kors was inspired by Africa’s golden savannas, while Donna Karan  took her cues from a Haitian artist. A chunky necklace from Michael Kors is pictured at upper right. The white and orange bangles are from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere.
