With clothing styles bulking up with warmer fabrics and plenty of layers for fall 2011, successful styling often brings the attention up to the face. One of the chicest ways to accomplish this effect this season is with a short statement necklace.

The Fall 2011 InStyle Makeover issue suggests jazzing up a Little Black Dress by adding a bold necklace along with a cuff and a belt. The dress shown on actress Abbie Cornish is from Gucci; the jewelry is not identified. The magazine also recommends stud earrings for every jewelry wardrobe, quoting stylist Rob Zangardi.

The September 2011 issue of Elle adds glitz to glitz, adorning an ensemble consisting of a metallic coat from Alberta Ferretti and metallic leather sport overalls from Jeremy Scott with a short statement necklace and ring from Atelier Swarovski by Mary Katrantzou.

Actress Demi Moore models a knit ensemble and short statement necklace in a current ad from Ann Taylor.

Actress Kate Winslet models an asymmetrical dress and gloves with a necklace of multiple twisted strands for St. John in a current ad.

A current ad from Shopbop.com crosses the neckline of a chunky sweater with a short necklace of silver textured chain.

A current ad for Saks Fifth Avenue features an ensemble by Giambattista Valli accented with a wide silver statement necklace.

The September 2011 issue of Allure features a cubic zirconia, sterling silver, bronze and stainless steel pyramid necklace by Basile & Pape.

The September 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar features an elaborate short statement necklace from Lanvin.

1940s style influence is a theme discussed in the September 2011 issue of Marie Claire. Among the featured items is a necklace of large spheres by Alexis Bittar. The photo spread also shows a cuff from Roxanne Assoulin for Lee Angel. Notice how beautifully the lines of the cuff relate to the geometric cut of the blazer shown above and to the left (just under the necklace). The blazer is from MM Couture by Miss Me.

An elegant dress with gloves and fur cuffs by Donna Karan New York in the September 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar is finished with the glint of a short necklace from Janis Savitt.

A short necklace from Giles & Brother adds the final touch to a sporty ensemble with a tweed topper featured in the October 2011 issue of Glamour. The parka and pants are from 3.1 Phillip Lim; the sweater is from Piazza Sempione; the bag is from Celine and the booties are from Christian Louboutin.

Necklaces are an important finishing touch to the season’s fashions. While short necklaces work beautifully with open necklines or lining the edge of a jewel-neck blouse or dress, collars are going up. Much more on this season’s focus on the neck to come.
