Hey Now, You’re a Rockstar

February 10, 2009

When it comes to Grammy fashion, the rest of that headline should read: Even if you don’t look like one.

Music’s biggest night failed to rouse much in the way of interesting looks. Instead of rocking edgy dresses and jewelry, celebrities went with largely subdued styles. Amid that trend, I loved Kim Kardashian (though I’m not entirely clear why she’s a celebrity) and Jennifer Hudson for departing from “tradition” without going over the top:

(And by "over the top" I mean you, M.I.A. and Paula Abdul)

Otherwise, the red carpet snoozefest offered little fodder for commentary so I’ll just get to the de ja vu “trends”.

For starters, dresses featured fussy necklines (like Kardashian’s and Hudson’s) that made necklaces non-existent and drop earrings stretched to shoulder-dusting lengths as seen on Carrie Underwood:

Cuffs or stacked bracelets, as illustrated by Taylor Swift, continue to be a uniform must-have:

And, in a sea of black, metallic and blue dresses, like Sheryl Crow’s, popped:

In sum, the Grammys were much like the Golden Globes in terms of staid fashion. But, ever the optimist, I’m still holding out hope that the Oscars at the end of the month will put an end to the Red Carpet Blahs.
