Jewelry to Honor the Philadelphia Phillies, World Series Champions

October 30, 2008

My hometown baseball team, The Philadelphia Phillies, won the World Series last night. It’s been 28 years since this team last won the World Series (though it did win the National League Championship in 1993), so this win is cause for celebration! Fans went absolutely nuts, spilling out onto the city streets, and a big celebration will occur downtown today; a parade starts at City Hall at 20th and Market Streets and continues down Broad Street to the Wachovia Complex.

In 1983, the Philadelphia 76ers brought home a National Basketball Association Championship win, and Philadelphia sports fans have been chomping at the bit ever since for another big win. Fans got their wish last night in Philadelphia in the top of the 9th inning when the Phils beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3.

Crowds of Phillies fans spilled out onto Passyunk Ave last night to celebrate the Phillies’ World Series win. The scene was nuts!

The excitement was evident in the the local sports bars, too, like Chickie & Pete’s.

Fans of the Phils and of fine jewelry who want to support their team can do so by wearing red jewels, monogram “P” pendants, and stars. Suggestions are below. Go Phils!

Were you at the game, or got your very own precious souvenir of the win? Let us know by posting a comment.

Yoa, Jen and Hedda! My nervous stomach felt so much better than it
did when my I watched Mitch Williams pitching relief in 1993.
Remember Wild Thing?....And speaking of National Anthems...my
step-daughter, Maura McKinney, sang the National Anthem in one of
the NL 1980 playoff games. It was the best I've ever heard. (No
bias, of course!).

I won't mention, Jen, that you were probably in grade school when
the Phils won the Series in 1980...or that my alma mater,
Pottsville Area High School marching band, played the opening
entertainment for that game. Anyway, a while back I wrote an
editorial in JCK titled "Ya Gotta Believe," quoting the late Tug
McGraw, the Phils' closer who clinched the 1980 Series with a
strikeout, and who died of brain cancer in early 2007. I got a lot
of comments from jewelry baseball fans on that editorial. So I just
wanted to let everyone know, in case they weren't watching the
Series, that Tim McGraw, Tug's country-singer son, sang the
National Anthem at the opening of the Philadelphia part of the
series. Then he spread some of Tug's ashes on the pitcher's mound.
Ya gotta believe. And I believe Tugger was up there smiling down on
us--and possibly giving that last pitch a little extra nudge as it
left closer Brad Lidge's hand for the final strikeout of the game.
If I see you at the Victory Parade tomorrow, you don't have to
duck. I know we'll both be working the late shift tomorrow instead!
Or maybe we'll bump into each other buying Phillies charms!
